YAN is a video essay inspired by my personal experience of quitting smoking. Within the duration of smoking a cigarette, the process of dealing with my addiction is paralleled to an attempt of reconcile with myself from my memory with a disconnected friend ---- a relationship that sustained via pixels.

- Inspiration & Development -
The pronunciation of YAN refers to cigarette & smoking in Chinese. In different tunes, the same pronunciation goes to characters of other meanings that draw semantic connections to the idea of smoking.
yān - smoke 烟 & fermentation 腌
yán - speech 言
yǎn - eyes 眼 & performance 演
yàn - weariness 厌

A cigarette can be thought of as a personal unit of time, through which time itself flees and in a way resembles a fleeting feeling of recollection. Like the smoke that dissolves and disappears in the air, images of the past come and go in the present. However, for this friendship that sustained over virtual contact, I found myself barely able to recall the images of us, as we relied on pixels to perceive and to remember one another. While the cigarette ash slowly accumulates as time goes, the pixels remain present in time, yet the images failed to leave an imprint in my recollection.
With resemblance to the addiction of smoking, I’m haunted by a constant urge to release from the vagueness of self in this memory. In response to the feeling of uncertainty, YAN explores the losing of self that dwells in the time formed by pixels.

“Cigarette is sort of like a reminder of your mortality in a way, you know, in each puff is like a passing moment, a passing thought, you smoke, smoke disappears. You know it reminds you to live is also to die somehow.”
- from Blue in The Face, 1995 by Wayne Wang and Paul Auster

- Experiment & Process -
Varied in forms, the grainy texture as a metaphor of time is the main visual element of the video to draw congruence of the two-fold addiction, the untraceable memory, and the digital contact.
